Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment GDA / DTX simfiles

Dream Theater is a famous Progressive Rock/Metal band who are known for their technical virtuosity. Drummer Mike Portnoy has won dozens of drumming awards. Liquid Tension is one of his side projects with Tony Levin and fellow bandmates John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess.

The GDA/DTX files on this site are drum simfiles designed for DTXMania, although they may be played in other drum simulators. They are shown in the order that I made them, from most recent to oldest. You can find more simfiles at GDAmania. Enjoy the files!

The opening track to DT's 10th album. It's filled with spicy double bass, with the first recorded blast beat by MP ever. I got rid of the intro and a big chunk of instrumental section (sorry JR!).

Sytematic Chaos is Dream Theater's 2007 album, and their first on the Roadrunner Records label. Five of the eight tracks on the album are here.

This song is the opening track of DT's second album "Awake". The song has a very distinctive drum part, with a few very unusual and original patterns. Instead of using a traditional backbeat, Mike spices up his grooves with a ton of syncopation and linear hand patterns.

Name: When the Water Breaks / Liquid Tension Experiment
Difficulty: Extreme/2BD (93/96)
Download: DTX (20.1MB)
Comments:

The 17 minute epic from Liquid Tension's 2nd album, all 7000+ notes of it :D
GDA Creator ran out of bars (Did you know there's a 500-bar limit?), so I had to compress 2 bars into 1 in some sections in order to fit the whole song in. it's also has some of Mike's hardest and most technical drum parts.

One of my favourite songs on Octavarium. It is DT's take on the events of September 11, 2001. The song starts off as a nice ballad but builds up to an emotional climax. The drum solo at the end is very cool. This animation of the DTX includes video and images from September 11.

Name: Train of Thought (album) / Dream Theater
Difficulty: Tracks 01, 05 (bas/adv/ext/2BD), Tracks 02, 03, 04, 06 (2BD)
Download: DTX (82.1MB)
Comments:

A massive project to accurately transcribe the entire album into DTX format. Train of Thought is DT's heaviest album to date, with a lot of metal influences. All the songs on the album (except for Vacant) in here. The music is "minus-one" (drumless), and most of the drum sounds are sampled from Mike's actual kit in the studio. Thanks to Atirl and Takeru who made a few of the original DTX files.

Track list difficulties:
01. As I Am (30/55/70/75)
02. This Dying Soul (93)
03. Endless Sacrifice (73)
04. Honor Thy Father (88)
05. Streams of Conciousness (86/84/59/32)
06. In the Name of God (90)

Name: Panic Attack / Dream Theater
Difficulty: Advanced/Extreme/2BD (67/90/94)
Download: DTX (10.8MB)

Definitely the loudest and fastest song in the album Octavarium. Some of the double bass patterns are quite challenging, especially the bridge leading up to the guitar solo.

Name: The Test that Stumped Them / Dream Theater
Difficulty: Extreme/2BD (91/94)
Download: DTX (6.6MB)
Comments:

I was attracted to making this song by the insane drum fills in the song, which comprise of Mike's classic hand/feet double bass fills. The alternating 6/8 and 7/8 time signatures only made it even more difficult to transcribe, because GDA Creator hates anything that can't be put neatly into 12/16 note divisions.

Name: Paradigm Shift (edit) / Liquid Tension Experiment
Difficulty: Basic/Advanced/Extreme/2BD (25/60/87/94)
Download: DTX (4.7MB)
Comments:

I was attracted into making this song after hearing it in DT's instrumedley. Like Acid Rain, I edited it into a 3 minute version. The drum patterns are varied and unqiue.

DTX (15.7MB)

Comments:

As performed on their DVD "Live at Budokan". This instrumental tour de force showcases the band's amazing technique. It is a medley comprised of their following songs by DT and LTE: "The Dance of Eternity", "Metropolis Part 1", "Erotomania", "The Darkest of Winters", "Ytse Jam", "Paradigm Shift", "Universal Mind" and "Hell's Kitchen". This simfile took literally forever to make... there are over 200 time signature changes and constant shifts in BPM.

Difficulty: 2BD (92)
Download: DTX (3.7MB)

Another one of my "experimental GDAs". In my opinion Acid Rain is one of the best instrumentals ever. The drum part is a lot of fun to play, but quite difficult as expected. I've edited it into a 3 minute version because the instrumental solo section is quite boring for the drums. This DTX has no drum keysounds. You can find a DTX of the full keysounded version of Acid Rain at GDAmania.

Name: The Dance of Eternity / Dream Theater
Difficulty: 2BD (88)
Download: DTX (6.9MB)
Comments:

This is an experimental GDA I made back in 2003. It was my first attempt at using odd time signatures in a simfile. This DTX was a nightmare to sync because DTX Viewer could not play a DTX from the middle of a song at that time (and still have sound), so I had to start from the beginning everytime. This DTX is not drum keysounded.

Name: Metropolis Part 1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper / Dream Theater
Difficulty: 2BD (92)
Download: GDA (5.0MB)
Comments:

A Dream Theater classic, it pretty much represents DT's style of music: odd time signatures, insane solos, weird drum patterns and wailing vocals. If you're new to Dream Theater, this song is a good starting point.

Name: Hell's Kitchen / Dream Theater
Difficulty: Extreme (67)
Download: GDA (5.2MB)
Comments:

A classic instrumental by DT. This GDA was originally made by X-02 and came with a MIDI sound file. So I put in the original music and pretty much rewrote the whole thing because there were so many wrong notes. The bar divisions are still all wrong, but I'm too lazy to rewrite the whole thing with the correct time signatures. There are also a couple of notes meant for double bass but its still playable with a single bass drum.

Name: Ytse Jam (edit) / Dream Theater
Difficulty: Extreme/Drum solo (84/?)
Download: GDA (2.5MB)
Comments:

My first DT GDA. It's only 1:45 long, and is made up of the middle part of the song leading up to the drum solo. The drum solo is copied into a GDA of its own so you can practice it seperately. This GDA is not drum keysounded.
